Become an independent town in 1922. Breathtaking sceneries, wild coves and amazing beaches extending over miles and miles. This is how Arzachena stands out, fascinating and unique. The landscape with its clear sky without clouds, that the wind blowing over this land takes away, stretches over 228 kilometers of surface and 88 of coastal strip.
Its economy, which in the past mostly focused on agriculture and mainly on sheep farming, is now mainly based on tourism, thanks to the high number of accommodation facilities of this important area of the Gallura region.
Other activities developed over time are those related to constructions, the extraction of granite and wine production that boasts an outstanding product, the “Vermentino di Gallura” wine.
Arzachena has a fascinating historical past that has its roots in its sites and archaeological findings all over its territory. Getting in touch with Punic and Roman populations, Arzachena covered great importance throughout the Judicial period, while it almost completely depopulated under Spanish rule and because of the lethal plagues that decimated the inhabitants.
After the second world war, especially since the 60’s, Arzachena experiences a quick increase in population which establishes also the beginning of economic growth, thanks to the birth of the Costa Smeralda, that leads Arzachena to the world of elite tourism.
Arzachena is one of the densely populated villages of the Gallura, and is, after Olbia and the Tempio Pausania, the third most important economic centre.
It is characterized by a marked dynamism, both in terms of population growth, with a population that has tripled compared to the sixties, and growing at a rate of about 16% every 10 years, and a significant increase of tourism and therefore availability of accommodation, taken advantage of its closeness o the Costa Smeralda.
Arzachena, rich in archaeological treasures of great cultural value, boasts many naturalistic treasures as for example the Stagno Saloni and the great number of beautiful beaches scattered all over its coastline.
The “stazzi” ,characteristic and original ancient farmhouses are spread all over the Gallura territory, several of which have been renovated and turned to comfortable B & B´s and agriturisms, where you can enjoy the real tastes of the local authentic cuisine.
The economy of Arzachena, once mainly based on farming and agriculture, is now almost entirely dedicated to tourism. Arzachena is one of the most important tourist centers of the island with a capacity of over 14,000 sleeping accommodations. Another highly developed sector is the service industry; in particular the one related to tourism, in addition to the construction industry, the nautical industry and hand crafts.
Towards the middle of July, Arzachena hosts the “International Folklore Festival”, a festival of folk groups, where Sardinian and Italian groups come together with international ones.
Arzachena is also famous for being one of the most renowned centers of wine production, whereas the famous “Vermentino di Gallura” won several major awards and praises of the wine producing sectors.
That’s why we warmly suggest you to visit the vineyards “Surrau” and the cellar “Capichera”, both set in the territory of Arzachen. This will give you the possibility to admire the prestigious estates where the authentic DOC wine “Vermentino di Gallura”, is produced and gets it guarantee of origin.
